YesAsia Editorial Description

The worlds of the living and dead collide in Jo Dong Oh's action fantasy epic The Restless. Presenting harrowing, yet beautiful visions of an ancient reimagined Korea and a timeless purgatory, the film enchants with its sweeping action and romance and aesthetic splendor. Having previously served as assistant director for Musa, Jo already has experience with period epics, and The Restless surpasses its predecessor in visuals and grandeur, employing state-of-the-art special effects to create majestic landscapes and striking action scenes that earned the film Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects trophies at the 44th Daejong Film Awards. Popular television starlet Kim Tae Hee (Love Story in Harvard) makes her feature film debut here alongside Jung Woo Sung (Daisy).

In the waning years of the Shilla Dynasty, the land is ravaged by chaos and violence, as demons roam freely amongst the people. Born with the ability to see ghosts, Yi Kwak (Jung Woo Sung) joins the royal squad to help battle the demons and the corrupt court. A failed coup, however, leaves all the members but Yi Kwak dead. While hiding in a shrine, he happens upon the entrance to mid-heaven, where souls reside for 49 days before reincarnation. There he meets So Hwa (Kim Tae Hee) who greatly resembles his deceased lover. So Hwa, who guards the gates between the mortal realm and mid-heaven, is thrown into danger when an army of restless spirits attempts to return to the land of the living. Yi Kwak comes to her rescue, only to discover the army is led by his former squad comrades.

Professional Review of "The Restless (VCD) (Korea Version)"

June 7, 2007

This professional review refers to The Restless (DVD) (DTS) (Special Edition) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
Cho Dong-Oh's The Restless has to stand as one of the most anticipated films to come out of Korea in recent years. The picture reunites star Jung Woo-Sung from the stellar Musa: The Warrior with many of that film's key technical staff along with others drawn from the elite of the Asian film industry in a high budget romance-action-fantasy picture. No expense was spared on this, and as the first stills released, it quickly became clear that if nothing else The Restless would be an astounding visual spectacle featuring an all star cast, stunning action set pieces and dazzling production design. The question was whether there would be some meat on those technical bones.

Jung stars as Yi Gwak, the last of the Imperial demon slayers. The rest of his elite squad - specially trained to keep the common people free from the demonic forces that would otherwise roam freely across the land - have been slaughtered by Imperial forces who have gone so far as to kill Yi Gwak's lover in their zeal to bring him down. He is totally alone, harried at every turn.

Using demons as bait, the military finally catches up to Yi Gwak. He escapes but not without first being poisoned, and he collapses into near death while sheltered in a remote shrine, only to wake somewhere else entirely, a strange city full of people he's never met who complain about his stink. The stink of the living. Yi Gwak, despite still being alive, has awoken in the afterlife, a sort of Buddhist holding pen for souls awaiting reincarnation. You'd think he would at least find peace here, but no. Demonic forces led by the dead souls of his former compatriots threaten to overwhelm the afterlife and destroy the souls contained there - thus effectively ending the cycle of life on earth - and only the amnesiac spirit of his former lover stands in their way. It falls to Yi Gwak to protect her and halt his beloved commander's sinister plan.

The Restless aims for epic spectacle and on that level it succeeds entirely. The integration of physical elements with CGI to create the afterlife is seamless and stunning, the production design flawless and the cinematography truly impressive. The film has scope and heft and uncommon visual depth. It is simply a marvel to behold. The wire-assisted martial arts sequences - which are plentiful - are also unusually strong, Jung proving himself again to be a versatile and entirely believable physical performer. Choreography is impressive, and several of the set pieces - the first demonic assault on the heavenly city, a lengthy sword fight played out on clothes lines suspended high in the air, a pair of Yi Gwak's former comrades pursuing him through a forest using a system of wires embedded into their backs - are simply jaw dropping. The digital effects in The Restless are arguably the best ever put on screen in Korea.

Those stunning visuals, however, are also arguably the source of the film's most significant flaw. Basically it seems as though everybody was so focused on the visuals that they simply forgot to finish the script. The Restless summarizes very well, it has all the elements you would need to build a quality script, but in execution it feels more as though they were working from a first or second draft than from a fully polished script. Characters play more as types than people, key relationships are never properly flushed out, and the villain's motivations - not to mention how he acquired his immense powers - are never made clear. The film moves from set piece to dazzling set piece throughout its running time and each are impressive when taken on their own, but the pieces never quite link up into a solid whole. Had they taken even a small fraction of the energy poured into the visuals and used that to bolster the script, the film would have been far, far better off for it.

The Korean DVD release is spare by Korean standards - the disc of bonus features includes a selection of behind the scenes documentaries and interviews plus the sixteen minute highlight reel prepared to sell the film at the American Film Market - but the transfer is excellent and the English subtitles strong.

The Restless is beautiful but frustrating. Beautiful purely because of the obvious level of artistry and sheer hard work that went in to making it. Frustrating because they came so close - so very close - to making something truly exceptional only to miss on such a basic, primary level. You can have all the visuals in the world, after all, but they ring hollow if they don't have story and character to back them up.

Meh.. Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I had some high expectation for this. The screen shots and clips looked incredible. I was expecting some spectacular fight scenes as the ones like in Chinese films and great graphics. Well I got some of it but it just ended up dragging and dragging. The 105 min run time ended up feeling like a 2 hour and 30 min movie.

The beginning was good, the characters however, just didn't work. I had no interest in their love. It didn't feel real. Thus I hardly cared what happened to them. The entire movie ended up being short skirmishes with long dragged out love angst in between. Fight scenes were good, not not nearly up to par with some of the movies I've seen. In conclusion, watch it for the nice effects and sets. If you are trying to find something deeper, then look somewhere else.

YUP.... Feels restless! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
After cathcing Jung Woo Sung in a moment to remember, I tried to watch all his films. Daisy was great too! But this restless movie will leave you restless! Despite the grandeur of the scenes..the script is lacking in substance. Too much emotional burst without preapration for a psychological foundation ofthe characters. Thats why it does evoke feelings from from the audience.

disappointing Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Try my best to like this movie but in the end it bored the hell of of me! The biggest problem is the script, the love story just drags on and on for nearly 2/3 of the film, too many flashbacks, some key characters just came out of nowhere, the lead actress just has one facial reaction for the entire film. I don't blame her though with a script like this, it gives the actors nothing to act on.

However, the film sure looks pretty with some stunning locations, excellent sound and CGI sequences. The same cannot be said for the sword fights I must admit, this is one of the film main attraction and yet it failed to live up to expectations. The earlier fights are quite good, the stand out is the one with 2 brother in the forest. Toward the end and especially the finale (very lame!), it failed completly in the action department.

The one film to compare this with is Shadowless Sword which is far more superior in term of story, action, etc

So give this a rent and if you must, buy it just to show off your big plasma/LCD screen (I did!)

beautiful.captivating!must see Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The Restless is beautiful not only in scenery but the love story. The love story was new and romantic, and could only be done perfectly with Kim Tae Hee and Jung Woo Sung. Jung woo sung has outdone himself again, and he and kim tae hee create the perfect chemistry. The plot itself is great, not like typical korean movies where something just never seems to make sense, but this fiction movie does and with all the right ingredients. The action scenes were also well done! One of my fav kmovies of all time including "The Classic", must see!!! 10/10
