Steal It If You Can (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD
YesAsia Editorial Description
Designer Choi Kang Jo (So Ji Sub) has a passion for stealing. He frequently goes to residential areas and tests out his robbery skills by outwitting alarm systems. Whenever he finishes his task, he only steals things of little worth because his sole purpose is to satisfy the joy of his unusual hobby. On one of his stealing escapades, Kang Jo visits the family of Ko Sang Tae (Park Sang Myun). Sang Tae and his beautiful wife Mari (Song Seon Mi) seem to lead a perfect life, but the latter has lost her sense of taste, and her cooking has become unacceptable to everybody. Kang Jo again only steals very trivial things - a remote control and food prepared by Mari - but little does he know that this is enough to stir up the anger of Sang Tae who pledges to take revenge.

Can't Live Without Robbery is a very enjoyable comedy. Frankly speaking, I didn't expect much when I watched this film, that may explain why I found it unexpectedly entertaining and engaging. Obviously, this is not a mega-budget production, but the director was smart enough to utilize his limited resources and produce a comedy that actually works. The premise of the story is quite brilliant. Kang-jo (So Ji-seob) is a successful computer game programmer. He is rich but he has a strange habit of burglary. The more difficult to break into a house, the more satisfaction he gains from it. His latest target is a big mansion in the rural area of the city that is owned by a civil servant Sang-tae (Park Sang-myun). He breaks into this house several times, but each time he only steals worthless stuff like TV remote controls and sushi. Sang-tae is enraged and he decides to fight back! What is good about this film is that the plot is very simple and direct, it does not contain any love sub-plot or distracting side elements, the viewers are rather able to pay their full attention to the battle between Sang-tae and Kang-jo. The jokes are well constructed as they always come at the right moment. Moreover, Most of the scenes are crazy, but not totally ridiculous or illogical, which makes it easier to follow and appreciate. Although the budget of this film was quite limited, the production quality did not deteriorate at all. Computer special effects are used effectively that greatly enhance the fun and excitement provided by the movie. Editing and cinematography are vigorous too. But what really captures the viewers' attention is probably the characters, especially the protagonist Sang-tae. Yes, this entire movie is centered on Sang-tae. Humors mainly derive from this impotent father/husband. He is weak and incapable of protecting his family from the burglar. This goon-like character is greatly ridiculed by the filmmaker. It's not until the end that he is finally able to regain his confidence and win the respect from his children. Conversely speaking, the depiction of another important character Kang-jo is quite brief and superficial. Apart from his burglary habit, the viewers do not really know too much about him. He is merely a tool for Sang-tae to regain his confidence. I would say the plot is quite unbalanced as it suffers from a lack of character development for Kang-jo and other side characters. Basically it is like a one man show of Park Sang-myun. If I were the filmmaker, I would probably turn Kang-jo into a female, as it can not only continue the trend of strong female lead in contemporary Korean cinema, the constrast between the inpotent Sang-tae and the capable Kang-jo would also become more dramatic and obvious. |

| This is so offbeat, yet charming. Parts really had me really laughing. Story-line is original, and the entire cast is terrific. Of course, So Ji is simply great to watch. |

| Nice comedy.. although come to think of it... So Ji Sup is stealing because of the thrill, not because he doesn't have any money. Park Sang Myun is really a good comedian, did his part well playing a father trying to defend their home from the thief. Nice movie, you will really get entertained. |

| The movie was pretty silly/funny. It was quite enjoyable, but it loses it's effect after a few screening after the first, but none the less the story was effective and i enjoyed watching the film. |

I haven't seen anybody talk about this Korean film, and I didn't hear any advance buzz before the DVD snuck into online stores last year... has it completely slipped under people's radars, or is it just because it's known by so many different names nobody knows what to call it? (My preferred name is "Can't Live Without Robbery", which is what YesAsia has it listed as. Anyway, it's a recent Korean comedy starring the husband from "My Wife Is A Gangster", and it's probably the best Korean comedy I've seen since that particular gem. A video game designer has everything he could want - wealth, fame, respect and good looks... but he still isn't satisfied, and to add spice to life he makes a hobby of burglary (no, not buggery). He breaks into the house of middle aged loser Park Sang-Myun, and steals... the tv remote and some pig's ear sushi. Well, what else would a man who has everything take? The burglary further precipitates Park's mid-life crisis, and further weakens his image with his contemptuous family. The situation doesn't improve when the same burglar returns a few days later and takes more. Park decides to regain his confidence and the respect of his family by capturing the thief. The premise is pretty simple but quite ingeniously constructed, making for another great Korean comedy that balances brains, depth, style and comic-book absurdity. It's the kind of film that ought to appeal to everyone, but then I thought that about MWIAG and that has plenty of critics, so maybe not. Personally, I thought it was wonderful - stimulating on many different levels and very inventive. I rank it right up there with MY SASSY GIRL. Highly recommended! |

| This was the first movie I saw of So Ji Sub. His performance was once again delivered by a creative interpretation of the plot. This was a refreshing change to his roles in all the TV dramas. I would highly recommend this film to those that enjoy a good combination of drama and comedy. |
