Screening in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, Ocean Flame is the second film from Mainland China filmmaker Liu Fendou, the director of Green Hat and screenwriter of Spring Subway and Shower. Based on a Wang Shuo novel, this sexually charged and ponderously violent arthouse hybrid is wholly different from most Hong Kong-set films as it's shot primarily in Mandarin, with a Mainland China main cast led by newcomer beauty Monica Mok and scenery-chewing actor Liao Fan. The film's producer, Simon Yam, checks in with a small supporting role along with Hong Kong character actors Lam Suet, Hui Siu Hung, Leung Ka Yan, Guk Fung, Him Law, and Derek Tsang.

Leggy waitress Li Chuan's (Monica Mok) normal life takes a fateful turn when she falls for maniacally charismatic conman Wang Yao (Liao Fan). Wang runs a swindling ring in which his female cohorts lure men to hotel rooms, and then he bursts in as the angry husband and violently coerces compensation. Blinded by her desperate love, Li Chuan reluctantly joins the gang, but she turns out to be a stubborn handful, even for the controlling and dangerously temperamental Wang Yao. With the police hot on their tracks and infighting settling in, they descend into a spiral of madness and bloodshed.

Wang Yao was a very shameless person and a blackmailer until one day he met a waitress named Lichuan.
