Writer-director Oshii Mamoru returns to the complex cyber world of his revolutionary 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell with the visually astounding Innocence. This sequel to the anime classic takes us to the year 2032, and a world where human beings live side-by-side with highly intelligent cyborgs. Part-man, mostly-machine detective Batou is assigned to investigate a series of murders committed by "gynoids", humanoid pet machines created for pleasure. But during his investigations, he makes some startling discoveries, including ones concerning his former partner, Major Kusanagi Motoko.

西暦2032年、人とサイボーグ、そしてロボットが共存する近未来。人間のために作られた愛玩用アンドロイドが、原因不明の暴走を起こし所有者を殺害、その後、アンドロイドは自壊し、電脳は初期化されるという未曾有の事件がわずか1週間に8件も続発した。テロの可能性を察知した公安九課の荒巻は、メンバーに事件捜査の命令を下した。相棒のトグサと共に、問題のアンドロイド捜査のため所轄書に向かったバトーは、鑑識課の検死官ハラウェイから、人間と人間の関係性についての持論を聞かされる。「人間は、何故こうまでして自分の似姿を作りたがるのか…」。その帰り際、沿岸のボートハウスで、ロクス・ソロス社のアンドロイド出荷検査官が殺害されたとの報せが舞い込んだ…。
