Circling around the prevalent theme of family love, this humorous, touching drama revolves around a young widow and her struggles in life. Reflecting on the many contemporary faces of motherhood, the drama takes a poignant look at today's mothers, from a young pregnant widow, to a widowed mother who abandons her child, to a working mother caught in a messy battle with her demanding in-laws. Before stepping into the role of empress So Seo No in Jumong, Han Hye Jin starred as the titular heroine in Be Strong, Geum-soon, playing a levelheaded, young woman whose marital bliss is cut short by her husband's sudden death. Pregnant and without any family support of her own, she lives with her in-laws but is met with insurmountable hardships. Sporting a boorish hairstyle that earned her the nickname of "lettuce head", Han pairs up with Kang Ji Hwan (Capital Scandal) who rose to instant stardom portraying a brash, charismatic young doctor who falls in love with Geum Soon. Touching on various sensitive issues surrounding premarital sex, organ donation, forced early retirement, and the never-ending strife between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, with loads of lighthearted humor and humanism, Be Strong, Geum-soon beautifully demonstrates how one family overcame their differences through the power of love and forgiveness.

Abandoned by her mother at an early age, Geum Soon was raised by her grandmother. After graduating from high school, she becomes pregnant with her first love's child, only to see him get killed in a car accident three days after their wedding, leaving her and their unborn child alone with no one to turn to. After much debate, Geum Soon's in-laws take her into their family. Three years later, Geum Soon still lives with her in-laws, raising her young son while working at Mrs. Oh's beauty salon to pursue her dream of becoming a hair stylist. Romance looms in the air when Mrs. Oh's son Jae Hee (Kang Ji Hwan), a cocky and handsome doctor, sets his eyes on Geum Soon. A chain of circumstantial events lead Jae Hee's mentor Dr. Jang (Jang Yong) to discover that Geum Soon is actually the daughter of his second wife who is now in desperate need of a kidney transplant.

오미자(윤미란)에게 샴푸 테스트를 받게 된 금순(한혜진)은 잔뜩 긴장한다. 스텝들이 지켜보는 가운데 금순이 샴푸를 시작하고, 순간순간 얼굴을 찌푸리는 오미자를 보고 혜미는 회심의 미소를 짓는다. 힘들게 머리 지압까지 마친 금순은 초초하게 테스트 결과를 기다리고, 드디어 오미자가 결과를 발표하는데…. 기분 좋게 집에 돌아온 금순은 자축하는 의미로 술상을 봐놓고 식구들을 기다린다. 성란의 문제로 고민하던 시완(김유석)이 급성장염으로 병원신세를 지게 되자 속이 상한 노소장(박인환)과 정심(김자옥)은 금순이 차려놓은 술상을 보고 크게 나무란다. 무안해진 금순은 음식을 싸들고 할머니를 만나러 간다.

급성장염으로 입원까진 한 시완(김유석)을 안타깝게 여긴 태완(이민기)은 씩씩거리며 성란을 찾아 나선다. 마침 병원을 찾은 금순(한혜진)은 태완과 함께 성란의 사무실로 가게 되고, 갑작스런 두 사람의 등장에 성란은 당황한다. 시완과 달리 너무도 잘 지내는 성란을 보고 덩달아 화가 난 금순은 시완이 병원에 입원했다고 말하고, 성란은 놀라 할 말을 잃는다. 집안 망신을 시킨다며 은주(이세은)의 뺨을 때린 장박(장용)은 자신의 행동이 후회스러워 잠을 이루지 못한다. 한편 영옥(양미경)이 은주의 친엄마가 아니라는 사실을 알게 된 오미자(윤미라)는 왠지 속은 기분이 들어 재희(강지환)에게 투덜거린다.

장박(장용)의 추천으로 병원 식당일을 하게 된 숙모(양희경)은 가족들과 오랜만에 둘러앉아 기뻐한다. 휘성을 추스려 업고 집으로 향하던 금순은 험상궂게 생긴 사채업자들이 숙모네쪽으로 향하는 것에 심상찮은 느낌을 받는다. 세간살이를 이미 다 엎어놓은 사채업자들의 횡포에 숙모네 가족들은 어쩔줄 몰라한다. 일주일 내로 돈을 갚으라는 사채업자들의 엄포에 금순은 전전긍긍한다. 금순은 미용실 부원장인 은주(이세은)에게 가불을 신청하지만, 은주는 원칙에 어긋난다며 억지부리지 말라고 한다. 조바심이 난 금순은 오미자(윤미라)네 집으로 직접 찾아가기로 결심한다.
